The Aquatic Technical Operator (ATO) Skill Set provides the essential skills and knowledge to monitor and maintain aquatic facility equipment, manage pool water quality, and coordinate the maintenance of plant and filtration systems in line with Australian standards and public health regulations.
This nationally recognised course is designed for anyone involved in the operational management of pools and aquatic facilities — including swim school coordinators, aquatic supervisors, and maintenance staff — who are responsible for keeping water safe, clear, and compliant.
Learners can complete this course in two ways:
Face-to-Face Delivery: A practical, one-day session with hands-on experience in an aquatic facility led by industry-qualified trainers. You can find these in the course calendar.
Online Delivery: A flexible option for those who already work in the industry. Learners complete all theory online and upload video evidence of practical tasks, such as pool water testing, chemical dosing, and plant room inspections
Important: Practical components can be completed in a real aquatic facility or through simulated activities that replicate workplace conditions. However, learners will need access to appropriate equipment and environments , typically a public aquatic facility to complete and record their evidence safely and accurately.
Once this qualification has been attained, there are no renewal requirement
Units of Competency:
- BSBWHS308 Participate in WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control processes
- SISCAQU015 Test pool water quality
- SISCAQU016 Manage pool water quality
- SISCAQU017 Monitor and maintain aquatic facility plant and equipment
- SISFAC009 Coordinate facility maintenance.
To ensure a successful and effective learning experience, please review the following pre-requisites before submitting an application for enrolment. These requirements apply to all students, regardless of funding:
- Age: While there is no minimum age to enrol in and complete this course, aquatic industry guidelines recommend staff be at least 16 years of age.
- Eligibility: Candidates must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or hold an appropriate visa allowing them to undertake education. Please note: Ampd Academy is not a CRICOS provider and cannot enroll students on an international student visa.
- Technology & Preparation: You’ll need a smart device or computer with internet access to complete online and pre-course activities — including a quick quiz to help us confirm your enrolment and check if any support is needed before training begins.
- Physical Fitness: Participants must have a reasonable level of physical fitness and swimming proficiency. This is essential for safely and effectively performing the necessary aquatic skills
- Facility Access: All learners must have access to an aquatic facility (such as a public pool or swim school) to complete the required practical assessments and evidence collection. If you are not currently working in an aquatic environment, simulated activities may be arranged where suitable, please contact for guidance
