What is an RTO, and Why Should I Care?

Hi, we’re Ampd Academy! A Registered Training Organisation (RTO), you’ve probably heard the term thrown around, but what does that actually mean? What do we do? And why should you care?

Let’s break it down.

What is an RTO?

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is a Vocational Training provider that has met government standards to deliver nationally recognised training.

In Australia, RTOs are regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) – or other state regulators. This means we must:
✔ Deliver quality training that meets national standards.
✔ Provide recognised qualifications that are valid across the country.
✔ Ensure students gain real, industry-relevant skills that employers trust.

RTOs can be enterprise training providers, TAFEs, schools, or private training providers (like us at Ampd Academy).

Why Does It Matter?

Training with an RTO isn’t just about getting a certificate, it’s about making sure your qualification is recognised, valued, and leads to real opportunities.

If You Train with an RTO, You Get:

✔ Nationally Recognised Training – Your qualification is valid across Australia.
✔ Employer Recognition – Employers have confidence, knowing that your training meets industry standards.
✔ Quality Assurance – The training provider is regularly audited to ensure compliance.
✔ Pathways for Further Study – You can use your qualification to progress into higher-level education.

If You Train with a Non-RTO, You Risk:

X A non-recognised qualification – meaning employers may not accept it, or your insurance may not cover you.
X Wasting time and money on training that doesn’t meet national standards.
X Missing out on legal compliance requirements, especially in regulated industries.

Imagine completing a course, only to find out later that your certificate isn’t valid for employment because the training provider wasn’t an RTO. That’s a costly mistake!

Not All Training from an RTO is Accredited

Here’s where things get interesting. Just because a course is delivered by an RTO doesn’t automatically mean it’s nationally recognised training.

Many RTOs also offer non-accredited training or licensing schemes that aren’t part of the national training system. These courses might still be valuable, but they don’t carry the same national recognition as accredited training.

So, how do you know if a course is accredited?
✔ Look for a course code when you enrol (e.g., SISSS00112 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher).
✔ Ensure you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment upon completion.

If a provider can’t provide these, you might have completed non-accredited training

Non-accredited courses can still be valuable. They might provide extra skills, refresher training, or industry licensing. The key is to know what you’re signing up for and whether it meets the requirements for your job or career goals.

One of the best things about accredited training is that no matter where you do it, the learning outcomes and skills should be the same.

Why? Because every RTO delivering an accredited course must meet the same national standards. The content, assessment criteria, and learning outcomes are all set by the national framework, ensuring that every student walks away with the same level of knowledge and skills, regardless of who they train with.

However, the way the course is delivered might look different from one RTO to another. Some might offer online learning options, practical workshops, or blended delivery models, but at the end of the day, the qualification is the same.

How Can You Check If a Provider is an RTO?

Before signing up for a course, always check if the provider is an RTO. You can do this in two easy ways:

Search them on training.gov.au – This is the official government register.

Ask them directly – Every RTO has a registration number (Ampd Academy’s is 31946), this should be easily accessible on all of their materials, including website and social media.

Why Should You Care?

At the end of the day, your training impacts your career. Whether you’re just starting out, upskilling, or needing a qualification for work, choosing an RTO ensures your effortslead to real, recognised qualifications, that count.

  • Make informed choices.
  • Train smart.
  • Amplify your potential with the right training.
